Educational Programs

One of the Guild's most important functions is to supplement various educational programs in their efforts to enhance the lives of New Mexicans of all ages. The Peter and the Wolf Program and the Music Guild's Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition for Piano and Strings are two of those programs.

Peter and the Wolf
2011-2012 Docents
The Guild is now in its fourth decade of presenting Peter and the Wolf to area first graders. Each year, approximately 4,000 first-grade students from Albuquerque Public Schools and Rio Rancho Schools are introduced to instruments of the orchestra via an interactive, curriculum-based presentation of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.

The Guild provides worksheets to each participating student that support the schools' curriculum and reinforce the Guild's Peter and the Wolf presentation. Docents from the Guild are specially trained and supplied with materials for the presentation, including a narrative to use as a guide, posters, audio visual equipment, and a recorded version of the story narrated by Leonard Bernstein.

This program won the
American League of Orchestras Gold Award for Education. Everyone involved in this program wins! The children gain knowledge and skills, and volunteer docents are rewarded through this unique interaction with the children.

During 2011-2012, the fourteen Guild docents presented at 37 schools with an average of five classes per school.  That's a total of 3,800 students who received the Peter and the Wolf program.   The program is offered at no charge to schools.
