Señorita Circle Party

December 23, 2016

All Señoritas from the past 60 years were invited to join the Music Guild of New Mexico's Board of Directors for the First Señorita Circle Social held at Karen Hopkins' home on December 23rd.  December 23rd is a busy day for all with its proximity to Christmas Day.  However, we felt this day would be optimal for any Señorita in town for the holidays.  And our hope panned out….  Judy Mullen's daughter was able to join us from Australia!  This was a fun event, and the first of many, where Señoritas share stories and memories from their Señorita year.   There were so many memories shared such as one year when ball gowns were gingham, to slips, trips & falls on the presentation stage.  Most importantly, we shared the bond of the time honored Señorita tradition.

We are looking for address updates and hope to have a validated database of Señorita contact information.  If you know a past Señorita or Doñita of the Symphony, please contact Karen Hopkins at karenhopkins@comcast.net with their information.

MGNM Holiday Luncheon

December 8, 2016

The holiday season was celebrated in true Music Guild of New Mexico fashion at the Canyon Club on December 10th.  Members were greeted with a holiday shopping faire and social hour.  Beautiful and delicious items were presented for sale by Silk Road Connection, RA Designs NM, The Chocolate Cartel, Shoofly 505 and Greeting Cards by Donna Bauer.  Judy and Michael Muldawer, provided folk music during our social time.  We were also provided a preview of the upcoming educational event where the Muldawers will perform tales and tunes from Tin Pan Alley.

Suzanne Jacobi, President, welcomed all and the Enchanted Mesa Show Chorus began the luncheon with a joyous holiday music concert.  These ladies rock!  Our 60th year of Senoritas was celebrated by a preview of several Senoritas modeling their gowns.  Wow, the Senoritas are spectacular and their gowns matched their beauty.  Dillard's provided an exquisite fashion show where our members showed off a taste of the gorgeous gowns available for us to purchase to wear at the Señorita Ball.  Let's all go to Dillards!

Suzanne commenced our business meeting and reports were presented by our Vice Presidents and Committee Chairs.  Yvette Lyle, Strategic Planning Committee Chair, reported on the work from the Committee and an education update was provided by Rick Cohen, VP Education.  Paula Bradley, VP Jackie McGehee Young Artists Competition, announced the date and updates on applicants for the 25th Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition.  The Competition will be held on Saturday Feb 18.  On Sunday February 19th, an extraordinary evening of music will be celebrated with the classical pianist and 1997 Van Cliburn Piano Competition Gold Medalist, Jon Nakamatsu. Proceeds from this evening will benefit the Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition.  Carol Cooper-Skopil, VP Señorita Ball provided Señorita Ball news, most notably the Ball date April 15.  Pam Reardon, Future Señorita Committee Chair, reminded the membership about sponsoring future Senoritas.  Pam is keeping a running list for sponsored young ladies of all ages.  Ann Jarrell, VP Grant Selection, provided an update on our upcoming Grant season.   Karen Hopkins, Co-VP Membership updated the group on Membership news and the efforts to obtain contact information on past Senoritas since 1957.  A past Señorita social will occur on December 23rd to celebrate our Senoritas over the past 60 years and reminded members of the new membership category, the Senorita Circle, open to all past Senoritas.

The luncheon concluded with the presentation of the Jackie Guaderrama Member Recognition Award to Pam Reardon for her Señorita recruitment efforts.  The winners of our 5 item raffle were announced which earned another $400 for our organization.  The Holiday centerpieces were another creative and one of a kind product by Teresa Edens.  We sold the centerpieces for $20 each which was a fraction of what we could purchase them at any florist.  Thank you Teresa for once again providing your talents to provide an over the top sophistication to each and every one of the luncheons you help with.  We are looking forward to the upcoming Jackie McGehee Young Artists Competition in February followed by the Señorita Ball on April 15th.  See you at the March Membership Meeting and Luncheon on March 17th.

Pretty Purse Palooza Fundraiser

September 25, 2016

Our second annual Pretty Purse Palooza was a huge success!  Most of all, it was fun, but we also made over $3,500 for our programs and projects: the Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition for Piano and Strings, the Senorita Program, Peter and the Wolf - music outreach to all ages, our Musical Instrument Petting Zoo, and our Grant Program benefiting non-profit music organizations in New Mexico.

Thank you to Kelly Lawrence for providing such a beautiful venue!  Jesse Staton, our very talented auctioneer, was sassy and entertaining. We enjoyed some elegant and delicious appetizers with vino. The bonus was the new purses that most of us carried away!

MGNM Fall Luncheon and General Meeting

September 15, 2016

We launched our 2016-2017 year with The Music Guild of New Mexico's Fall Luncheon and Membership Meeting at the Hotel Andaluz. Members gathered on September 15 in the ballroom which was a wonderful accommodation for our group.  We started the lunch with an "Icebreaker Activity" to get members interacting while finding out information about the Guild.  Suzanne Jacobi, President, welcomed all followed by Jackie McGehee who gave the group an overview on The Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition: Past, Present, and Future.  The Nominating Committee was voted on and passed.  Yvette Lyle and Denise Lemanski introduced the upcoming Pretty Purse Palooza fundraising event  which will occur on September 25th.  The purses presented were so appealing, an impromptu purse auction occurred with 3 purses bringing $450 to our coffers.  Renee Grout & Karen Hopkins, Co-Vice President of Membership updated the group on Membership news followed by Carol Cooper-Skopil, Vice President of the Señorita Ball on Señorita Ball news, most notably the new Ball date April 15. The final report given by Susan Rogers, Vice President of Senorita provided news on what the Senoritas have done over the summer.  The luncheon concluded with the presentation of the Jackie Guadarrama Member Recognition Award to Karen Hopkins.  The winners of our 5 item raffle were announced which earned another $300 for our organization.  We are looking forward to the upcoming Guild year!

MGNM Instrument Petting Zoo

June 4, 2016

Many thanks to Diana Whitehouse and her intrepid volunteers for another very successful Musical Petting Zoo at the Albuquerque Folk Festival! There were so many "children of all ages" at the tables, some more than once,  thoroughly enjoying playing the instruments and inspiring some great budding musical talent!  Barry Simon's "Peter and the Wolf" presentation was a delight and enjoyed by all who attended.  How wonderful for MGNM to be invited to provide this educational opportunity for our community,"because music matters!".

MGNM May Luncheon

May 18, 2016

The MGNM luncheon and general meeting on May 18 was a great success.  We started the meeting with the Q-Tones singing for us.  They are the a cappella group of the Gay Men's Chorus.  They were incredible and received a standing ovation when finished with their program.  Pam Reardon and Yvette Lyle received the Jackie Guaderrama award and Paula Bradley won the Grace Note award.  Paula very much deserved this award for her dedication over the years to the Guild.  The new Board of Directors was installed with Suzanne Jacobi as President.  We look forward to the many things this Board will accomplish.

MGNM March Luncheon

March 16, 2016

We had such a fantastic March 16th luncheon at Tanoan Country Club.  We had seventy guests and they were treated to two wonderful performances.  The winners of the piano and violin competition, Presley Gao and Maggie King, were truly amazing and we know that everyone in the room was just amazed by their musicality.  As always, the raffle items were always fun and we raised over $200.00 in the raffle alone.  The Slate of Officers for 2016-17 was presented. The meeting was truly a success in all ways.
