November 2017

The Señoritas' Life Skills event took place on November 19.  This year we switched it up a bit and had a two-part program.

The first part was actual self-defense training at Training for Warriors led by Vincente Alvarado, owner and former APD officer and two other current APD officers.  The girls arrived dressed and ready for hands-on self-defense instruction.  The girls practiced the techniques that they learned with a partner.  Self-defense: a concept that the girls will carry with them for a long time to come.

The second part was at the home of Annette Arrigoni where our guest speaker Katie Snapp, author of Skirt Strategies, spoke to the girls about leadership as a woman and shared some of her savvy tips from one of her books.  Katie Snapp is a coach and trainer for women in leadership and author of 2 books for women of influence.

2017 – 2018 Senorita
Scavenger Hunt and Ice Cream Social

On Sunday, August 14, (out of 20) Senoritas gathered at the El Caballero Neighborhood Park for the Auntie Mame scavenger hunt.  We have 5 Auntie Mame groups with 4 girls per Auntie Mame.  The Senoritas gathered into their smaller groups and set out to find organza bags with puzzle pieces.  Once all of the organza bags were found we walked to Susan Rogers house to enjoy ice cream and cookies while the girls put their puzzles together.  Once the puzzles were complete, each one revealed a picture of their Auntie Mame.    Everyone was so excited.  We have a GREAT group of girls!

While this was going on the mother were in Susan’s backyard around the pool for a deep dive into the Senorita program.  This included, what to expect during the next 8 months along with the financial obligations.
The girls participated in waltz lessons with their fathers, preparing for the presentation at the ball. They also enjoyed dance lessons with their dates, including salsa and two step.
It has been a great year getting to know one another!  Everyone is looking forward to the ball.

On Sunday, October 22 the Senoritas had a date with dad at Silva Lanes.  They enjoyed an afternoon of bowling with their fathers and other Senoritas.  Everyone had a great time as the competition heated up.  We had a great turn out and most of the father-daughter teams dressed up to look alike.  We awarded prizes to the top 2 most look alikes and for the lowest bowling score.  Lots of fun to flip-flop a competition.  A good time was had by all!

On Sunday, September 17 the Etiquette Dinner was held at the Albuquerque Country Club.  Mr. Chip Hindi was our presenter.  He did a spectacular job relating to the girls and making them feel special.  He gave a wonderful demonstration on how to conduct yourself while enjoying an elegant dinner.  He did it so seamlessly.  ACC prepared a delicious four course meal.  The evening was definitely 4 STAR.  The girls truly enjoyed this event.  It was an elegant time as we all learned the art of etiquette.

March 2017

On Sunday, March 5 the Senoritas and their fathers met at Fishback Studio of Dance for the final event prior to the Ball.  This is one of the most special events of the year as it is a precursor as to what will take place the evening of the Ball.  The Senoritas learned how to waltz while in the arms of their fathers or special person who will be presenting them.  After an hour of practice with fathers/special person the Senoritas' dates arrived.  This is always a fun transition from being a daughter to being a beautiful date.  Everyone had a great time and learned the 1 - 2 - 3...1 - 2 - 3... of how to waltz.  Next date, Ball Rehearsal.  We are ready and so excited.

October 2016

We gathered at Joy Junction on October 15 to learn more this homeless shelter and all that they do for the homeless in Albuquerque.  We were given a tour of the facility and learned that Joy Junction focuses primarily on homeless families and that they never turn away a family in need.  We had a hands on experience in volunteering and serving the homeless lunch.  The individuals there were appreciative to have the Senoritas there and mentioned several times that the girls made them smile.  It was a heart wrenching experience and one that will stay with all of us for a very long time.

Fathers and Daughters met at Silva Lanes on October 16 for a bowling extravaganza.  Everyone had a great time as the competition heated up.  It was a fun and collaborative experience as we broke into teams to compete for highest score.  We also awarded a prize for lowest score, the father/daughter look-a-like and the father/daughter who had the closest birthday.   Each father/daughter pairing was photographed and then we had a group photograph thanks to the Cohen’s.  A good time was had by all!  We talked about the next time we would be together for the waltz lessons and this seemed to add to the spirit of this program.

On Sunday, August 28, twenty (out of 21) Senoritas gathered at the El Caballero Neighborhood Park for the Auntie Mame scavenger hunt.  We have 5 Auntie Mame groups with 4 to 5 girls per Auntie Mame.  Each Auntie Mame group was color coded.  The girls were given a Welcome to the 2016 – 2017 Senorita Program Letter with instructions to find their group by the color of the paper that the letter was printed on.  They gathered in their smaller groups and set out to find 25 small organza bags that were the same color as their letter (each bag included 1 puzzle piece).  After all 5 Auntie Mame groups found their 25 organza bag with the puzzle pieces we walked back to the home of Mrs. Susan Rogers for an ice cream social and for the Auntie Mame groups to put their puzzles together.  Once the puzzles were complete they revealed a photograph of their Auntie Mame.  It was so exciting for the girls to see a beautiful picture of their Auntie Mame.  They broke into their smaller groups and enjoyed ice cream and began the process of making lifelong friends.  Pictures were taken of the entire group and then the smaller Auntie Mame groups.  The girls had a great time and the positive energy was palatable.

On the evening of July 12, ten senoritas, Auntie Mames and other Music Guild of New Mexico members gathered for a trip to Santa Fe to experience ‘Romeo & Juliet’.  Once we arrived at the opera everyone enjoyed each other’s company while dining on boxed dinners from Le Chantilly.  The opera was moving and very entertaining.  This was a wonderful way to kick off the 2016-2017 Senorita Program.  Friendships are beginning to flourish and the foundation for a great Senorita year has been laid.

March 2016

For those who have never seen waltz lessons, they are so fun... and funny!  Dads, daughters, and dates all explored the little known art that is the waltz on March 13 at the Fishback Studio of the Dance.  It was actually... HILARIOUS!  Everyone was cracking up and it was, quite possibly, the world's biggest "ice breaker"!  All were instructed as to what is to be expected at the Ball.  The girls were all positively adorable.  We are very excited to share them all with you.  They have worked very hard.

Señorita News!

January 2016

This past Sunday's Senorita event proved to be a big hit with the girls and their mothers. We began with an "preparing for college" fashion event at Anthropologie in Uptown. The girls benefited from a fashion seminar as well as a mini fashion show where they modeled their own selections from the store. Of course, pizza made everyone channel their inner fashionistas even better! We then were off to MAC where we learned copious amounts about makeup "dos and don'ts" for all occasions as well as the Ball! This portion of the event required sweets. Clearly!  A great time was had by all. We are especially fond of this stage of the program, as you can really begin to spot new friendships forming among girls who were previously a little shy around each other. We love watching them branch out. We have the big presentation meeting on the evening of the 28th, at which time we will lay out everything the girls can expect on the evening of the ball. This marks the beginning of crunch time. Love it!

What fun and fulfillment our Senoritas enjoyed this last month!  We held our annual fall party with the kids at Joy Junction.  We wish you all could feel the beauty of this function!  It is so heartwarming, and the Senoritas are rendered speechless every time!  It is so amazing!  We frosted that cake with our Father/Daughter costume bowling at Sylva Lanes dressed in full regalia.  It was too funny!  Various prizes were awarded and smiles were everywhere.  The girls are really getting to know each other with each month and are learning the joys of giving to their community. Stay tuned for November!
